Here's a tip to help you choose a name:
Check out all the names you get, then sit down with your cat in a quiet place. Make sure he's nice and relaxed, then just stare into his eyes as long as he will allow you too. (Don't get in his face though. You might make him mad).
I know it sounds weird, but when you connect eyes with an animal in a relaxed atmosphere, it seems like you both also connect souls for a few brief moments. It's better if he's not being hyper or too sleepy to keep his eyes open.
You may get a feel for what name belongs to him then.
I vote for the names Rusty or Rex.

What about naming your cat pepper or patches? Maybe you should just call him cat. Just give it some time and eventually you'll just start calling him something automatically. My cat's name started out as Pumpkin and now I just call it Peeders.

You could call him Pepper for the peppered patches of his fur :-).
