my cat had kittens 3 weeks ago. we have kept her in the bathroom where she had them because its the only safe place from my dogs and small children. we left the door open a crack tonight because she likes to take a break from the little ones and instead she moved them under my four year olds bed. we had to move them back because its my sons favorite place to play. now shes carring them around and placing them in tha middle of the bathroom floor. their all crying because their hungry. her teats are swollen because there so full of milk. she keeps making a low growl and pacing. she wont feed them. i think shes lost it! what should i do? oh and before anyone says it she was pregnant when i got her and is grtting fixed in three weeks. thats when the vet said it would be fine.

she has a large cardboard box in the bathroom with a hole cut in it that only a cat can fit through you cannot see the kittens unless you lay on your stomach and peak through the hole. inside the large box she has another smaller box with a hole cut in it and that is the"nest". this is the only place the dogs cannot get the kittens or my two year old.

the upstairs is gaited during the day from the kids and the bathroom is upstairs. the door is cracked all day long. after obsreving all morning and most of the night the problem is she doesnt want them to explore outside the nest. everytime one of them climbs out she starts the frantic moving and carring them around. apparently she doesnt want them to grow up.

Remember, cats may be cute and lovable, but their ancestors are from the wild and they possess the same instincts as their bigger cousins. Cats are very territorial and will move their young around so "predators" will be less likely to catch their young. It's actually pretty normal for cats to move their kittens to different spots around the house, especially dark spaces. So dont worry, she hasnt lost it. It just shows that her instincts are kicking in. I suggest that you place the kittens and the queen (mom cat) in a closet and just leave the door cracked enough so the mom can get out to get a break or eat. Put some blankets down so they can curl up in and this might do the trick. If she moves them again you might want to just give in and let her do it and just keep the dogs away from the area. She will only do this for the first three/four weeks of birth. I know this cause I have had18 cats growing up and most of the mothers did this. lol. Hope this helps.

The answer is simple. You can't keep a mother cat wiht babies in such a small place such as a bathroom. It's not big enough. You can't designate a room in your house for at least another 3-4 weeks for them to have? WHy?
Because #1, no cardboard box will be suitable for muhc more that a few weeks for any animal. #2 She's re-locating them in various places because SHE HAS NO ROOM!!!, the kittens are growing in size, maybe not much to you, but to her and the space she's in, the are growing 7 feet a day. #3, her teats are swollen and huge because she's not getting the proper time away from the nursing kittens. She's stuck in there with them, and being as old as they are all they have/can to do is nurse. And she's got no choice...#4 She's growling and pacing and stopped feeding them because she's over stressed. Mother kittens NEEEED serious time away from their babies, and not just for selfish reasons. They'll suffocate her. And they are.
She's grown to find her babies as annoyances, and it'll get worse each day that goes on. PLEASE, please try giving them a room, you may find that she'll become less irritated and start feeding again. She's got no time to relax, no time to do anything. If you want the best for all of them, don't keep them in the bathroom another day, your killing them. If you have no other choices, and a bedrooms not an option, get them to some one or a shelter that can give them the proper care.
I'm a shelter volunteer and konw cat behavior like the back of my hands. I'm rather upset that things are this way for you and them, I just hope you take the right measures to ensure their wel being and health.
OH, another warning... if she continues to get upset like this, there is a GOOD CHANCE that she may take out her agression, and kill her own young. Seriousyl...

Cats are very territorial and she probably felt disturbed in the bathroom. You might try laying her down on her side and petting her while the kittens feed.
Also placing her and kittens in a cardboard box will make her feel more isolated and proteted. Maybe even hang a blanket over that part of the bathroom

Some cats can freak out and kill their own kittens if things feel out of control to them. Sometimes it isn't easy to understand what is upsetting them. They have raging hormones just like we do. But from your description, you haven't had her long. Sometimes it takes cats that are overly nervous some time to calm down and relax. But in the meantime you need to watch closely to see if the kittens have been able to nurse. If they are not able to nurse for a significant period of time (several hours) you will need to feed them yourself with an eye dropper. It's a good sign that she is trying to take them somewhere and not simply abandoning them. But just because she's dragged them under a bed, doesn't mean she's feeding them and you need to make sure she is.

Cats like a dark secluded place, Put them in a closet or some place like that and shut her in, she don't like you fooling with those kittens. She is real anxious, because you moved them, once you do this she will calm down. remember a dark place where she can be alone with the babies.

Take the dogs out to stay somewhere else for week. Then leave the mother and her kittens and let them find a place to stay because she might not like the bath room .If she goes somewhere you don't want her to (that's not risking her life) then leave her let your son keep out because he might disturb them.

Sounds like she is frustrated. Maybe she wants a dark cozy place to sleep with her babies. I kept my momma cat with her babies in a box in the bathroom but didn't have so much activity going on like at your house.

Ahhhhhh! it truly is not any longer sturdy! the kitten may die from no longer nutrishion {sorry about the misspellings} you want to bottle feed it or have a vet bottle feed it {more desirable proper theory} if the mother has rejected the kitten she probably wont change her ideas
