you can grasp on to any conversation by sifting out the unnecessary parts and getting the main idea sorta, like, selective hearing ,you hear and remember what is important

That's a woman's phrase; it means that everything you have ever done is wrong and now you have to listen to her rubbish you for the next 50 years. Run for the hills dude, or just find a hobby away from her.

It means you sit with your mouth shut. You may nod, you may say ummmmmm, oooohhh, aah haa, nod some more. A hug and a little sympathy or empathy is in order...but that is it.
You are a sounding board only...they just wanna talk and talk and get it out. No advice is called for. That is a good listener.

To REALLY listen and care about the other person and not focus only on what you are going to say next.

It means you listen...not butt in, not interject...listen. not passively, as in "that person is talking but what the hell are they saying?" but ACTIVELY listening, really trying to understand what is MEANT, not just what is being said.
