We are looking into buying a new dog - we have a retreiver mix and want to get him a buddy (our old dog passed away and he needs a new friend but I want to get a smaller dog this time - he weighs 80 pounds). We live in a suburban/city area and also have children (and a cat).

We just tried getting a mutt from the pound and she attacked our other dog twice. Which ended up causing a lot of emotional trauma for our daughter and costing a lot of money at the vet for our other dog. So I am a little skittish about going to the pound again (even though we got our other dog that way). The pounds won't give us a puppy because we have a baby and I want to raise it myself so I know the dog.

Beagle- awesome family dog. Very loyal, loves kids, very smart, and they are a great size (about 30 pounds knee high).

We had a beagle (12 yrs old), and the adoption group we volunteer for sees a lot of happy families with beagles.

Beagles can be a little hyper -- so be careful if you want a calm peaceful house! I've always heard good things about retrievers. We've got a lab and she's absolutely wonderful with people. She's not a "real" lab, she's just mostly lab. She has a perfect temperament and is very "clean" for a dog. She only weighs about 50 pounds, the most she's weighed since we got her in 1998. (She's an older dog)

I wouldn't suggest a puppy, I've learned that it's often easier with a mostly grown dog. Then you know their size and maybe they have even been house trained. I would strongly suggest working with a rescue organization in your area. There will likely still be an adoption fee. But these animals may have been fostered in a very loving environment and their "foster" family may know how they will react to children, men, women, etc. These animals are often house trained, too. After having many dogs, I would recommend a female. From the labs, bassets, beagles, German shepherds, and various little dogs I've ever been around, females are often much calmer and more gentle with people.

Best Medium Sized Dog

A Boston Tarrier is probably your best dog fitting your description specifications. Mine weighed about 75-80 lbs, but he was spoiled so alot of that weight was my fault. Ha Ha. We had him neutered at an early age and used a newspaper to rear him of wrong doing. The sound is what affects a dog not the physical "POP". Through out the years he was so good with potty training via newspaper, younger children, and people in general. After being taught, they conform to your rules. These dogs are very smart. They are mainly loving dogs, only will bite if severely threatened or taught. Sadly mine just recently passed away after over ten years with my family.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7Go

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

I would consider a boxer. They are mid-range large (60-70 pounds, generally), and are GREAT with children. Many people confuse these dogs with more notoriously "vicious" breeds such as pitbulls, but that it not so. In fact, the boxer is famous for being a very gentle dog with children, and very protective of the family with outsiders. A perfect family dog. We love ours to death!
