Oh Beagle dogs are the best dog in the world!!! You have to give them lots of love and they will be your best friend! I had a beagle puppy that I got from the pound! She was the best dog I ever had!! The beagle that I had would only bark when she felt that I was in danger!! The one that I had was easy to potty train, I would just rub her nose in the mess that she made and yell "NO" to her in a mean voice. It took her about a month to learn to let me know that she had to go outside, she was about 8 mos when I got her from the pound. I also used a choke chain on her when she did bad things, when she did good things I always made sure that I rewarded her with treats and praise. If you use two different tones of voice with them they learn much better......Juat like kids....they need to know when they are doing good, and bad!!! Hyper, not to much, but they are very loyal dogs and will get very excited when they know you are home!! Mine would howl at me when I would get home!! It was cute!! If you live in a house, it woun't seem bad, in an apartment, is might piss your neighbors off, but they are very loving a great dogs to have!!!!

Let me first say, I love my beagle to death and I would never get rid of her. Now, if I knew how "bad" a beagle could be I probably would not have her. Yes they bark a lot. I finally had to move out of my apartment becuase she barked so much that the neighbors kept complaining. I even did all those tricks they tell you in books and I went out and got a bark collar ( I really didnt want to but I was desperate). Besides the barking, she tears up EVERYTHING. We finally had to bungee cord the lid to the trash can. Again I love her and shes my baby, but she is a little devil. She does go potty outside for the most part. We didn't have too much dificulty with that. I think she would be ok for older kids over 10 but not younger. She can be aggressive and tempermental at times. She is over a year old now and we still have to make sure nothing is within reach where she can chew it up.. like tv remotes, cordless phones, newspaper on the coffee table and even placemats on the dinner table. Hope this helps.. I hope if you dont get the beagle that it will still be adopted by a loving home.

The Beagle is a gentle, sweet, lively and curious dog that just loves everyone! A happy little tail-wagger! Sociable, brave and intelligent. Calm and loving. Excellent with children and generally good with other dogs, but should not be trusted with non-canine pets, unless they are socialized with cats and other household animals when they are young. Beagles have minds of their own. They are determined and watchful and require patient, firm training. This breed doesn't like being left alone. Consider buying two if you will be gone a lot. A Beagle has a loud baying cry that was a delight to hunting horsemen, but can be disturbing to family and neighbors. Beagles have a tendency to follow their own noses. They may take off on their own exploration if let off their leash in an unfenced area.
Some lines can be prone to heart disease, epilepsy, eye and back problems. Also prone to chondroplasia, aka dwarfism (warped front legs, like a Basset's). You can see an example of his condition by looking at Bently's photo at the top of this page

Beagles are essentially hunting dogs mostly rabbits & other small game. They have a tendency to chase anything that moves & can follow a scent for miles. When left in an enclosed area for an extended period they will dig to escape. They are also good climbers so take that in consideration.I had 2 beagles, one died of old age & the other lost a battle with a bear.If you are looking for a family pet I would give the breed a 4 out of ten with ten being the highest.

THEY DIG!!!! If you have carpet, expect to find a couple patches missing if you get him young. Great with kids. Training depends on the owner. YOU ARE ALPHA. Hyper, not really but can be a handfull depending on the dog not the breed. Barking, again, depends on the dog. Some i've seen are quiet most of the time some are loud and yappy. Housebreaking, just keep them on a schedule and you should be fine.

I had a bunch of beagle at one time. We lived in the country so they were hunting dogs. They hunt rabbits. They are cute and very friendly. My female beagle had 10 puppies. She was a lemon beagle, that is what they call the ones with yellow hair. Anyway they are great.

They are great with kids, very gentle, they can be trained not to bark all the time, but they are very hyper. The need a lot of run/play time daily.

I have heard that beagles are very stubborn dogs, most particulary to train. Neverless they make loving companions and should do good with kids unless provoked by them. Good Luck!
