Ok, everytime there is an argument abou the bible there is always someone saying oh! its the old testament. Well if Christians follow only the new testament then WHY do they still have the old testament and even quote it sometimes(Lectivus to say being gay is bad or all of genesis to talk about creation etc..)? I say if you don't follow it anymore then rip it out of all the bibles and be done with it, or is there some reason why you still read it? Jesus himself said the old ways should be forgotten and that you should follow the new way.

I think that is the problem. People look at the old side but choose to ignore the bad stuff yet still protect it. And also use it to discriminate against gay people.

The whole Bible is a flawed, man-made book. It may contain some historical facts, but it is mixed in with nonsense and fantasy.

The Old testament points to Jesus Christ and teaches the Law what we should do and The New Testament is when Jesus Christ was here with us and teaches the Gospel God's Love. You see the Bible has two main teachings the Law and The Gospel. The Law is in the Old Testament with the Ten Commandments The Gospel shows God's Love for us with the miracles and Jesus dieng on the cross for our sins. Also I forgot who but some guy summerized the Ten Commandments The main word is "Love"

Christians believe that the entire Old Testament pointed to the coming of Christ the Messiah. When Christ came he fulfilled the Old Testament. For example, Christians don't celebrate Passover in the same way the Jews do because they believe that Jesus is now the passover lamb and that that experience pointed to Christ.
That doesn't mean that many things mentioned in the Old Testament aren't a good idea.
Thou shalt not kill would be a good example.

Jesus did not say the old ways should be forgotten. He said that until heaven and earth passed away, not one "jot" of the law would be erased. Jesus was the fulfillment of the law.
I don't mean to upset you, or anyone....but God's word says that homosexuality is a sin in the new testament as well, most clearly in Romans 1.

Because alot of the Laws of the Old Testament are now the Laws of the New Covenant. In the Old Testament we are commanded to believe in God who is Jesus. The same Law is the Law of the New Covenant. The other Laws that no longer apply you do not disregard but you live by Every Word that proceeds out of God's Mouth. Jesus said not one part of God's Word will pass away until all is fulfilled.

There are wonderful historical parts of the Old Testament. The prophets, especially Isaiah, tell about the coming of Christ. The story of Joseph is absolutely AMAZING! The psalms are beautiful, some of the proverbs are just plain entertaining, and the story of Job is a lesson of hope. You don't have to live your life according to the Old Testament but reading it helps understand the history of the nation of Israel. Try THE MESSENGER, a modern version of the bible.

Matthew 5:17-Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.19: Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Of course you can find other verses that contradict this. But, i think they keep the OT around because without it they can't claim that they have prophecies. As if something happening in the NT that was written about in the OT is actually a prophecy. It was not as if the writers of the NT had never read the OT. But nonetheless that's one reason it sticks around.

I look at it as just a historical reference, nothing more. But I do think it's funny that we threw out SOME things from the old testament (stoning people for stupid things, women not being allowed to wear pants, etc.) but we still vehemently hold on to other parts of it (gay people are bad, birth control is bad, etc.). It's completley retarded.

The whole Bible should be studied and many lessons learned by mistakes made by those who lived in the old testment.Jesus made it easier to understand how to live and be saved.Man had made it quite difficult with so many rules that kept being added.Seeing wickedness in everything.Remember these were an uneducated people that mostly were nomads, but they were showed great miracles by God .

I used to think that the old testament did not apply to me too. I am finding a lot in the old testament that still applies, needs to be heeded, and yes we are to live according to the old testament, we simply no longer have to sacrifice animals for forgivness of sins, Christ was that sacrificial lamb for us, but we are still to turn away from ours sins.
