i've found my goal in life today. it's the reason why i'm on earth-- i'm going to build an orphanage. when, where, how? i'm still thinking about it...
i'm only 15 years old right now... and i want to be a lawyer... but i discovered that being a lawyer is a process... not a destination. i want to make lots of money and start an orphanage in rural area China...
here are some things you can help me with:
1. how much might it cost?
2. what facilities might i need? (dorm, school...etc)
3. do you know any articles on this?
4. are there any more information you can provide for me?
-- i need you help to help other people! please, i am serious about this and it'd be great if you can be serious in your answers!!

old_lady: thank you so much for your support, but i should tell you this. i am chinese, and i know that in rural places, women do have more than one kid.. because the gov't can't control them... and they tend to kick out the girls and keep the boy. there are many kids out there who need help... and i think i should start with my own country.
but you are right, africa is in great need, too. i want to help as many people as possible! thanks again!

mashedpotatoes: thank you too! will, i'm not going to actually be a caretaker there... i'm just the money provider, and i want to oversee the staff to know that the kids are been taken care of.

one more thing:
I AM CHINESE, I JUST LIVE IN AMERICA

i think that what you are trying to do is great. that just sounds so perfect. an orphanage would cost hundreds of thousands just to build. but the type of building youd need might even cost a million dollars. you wont need a school, because children can always b sent to a public school. then again, were talking china, and im not aware of their policy on schools there. you would need a large kitchen, people to cook, people to help clean, people to just help you watch the kids, lots of bedrooms for the children, be able to buy them the things that they need to feel like they have just a stable a life as any other child out there. you need to let them know that no matter what, you are there for them. understand that an orphanage will be a twenty four seven job. you cannot just go to bed, and expect to be done for the night. a child might get sick, or have a night mare, and need you to be there. you will be like their mother. also understand, that taking on a job like this will mean not being able to have an actually biological family of your own. if you get married, your husband has to understand that you probably should not have children, when there are so many wonderful children at your orphanage for adoption. it would really hurt them. so you also need to be able to see where they are, from their point of view. you need to know that an orphanage is a job for a lifetime, not for a few years, a decade, but a lifetime. are you really ready for that?

An orphanage in rural China? You would do far better to look at Africa, where the help is desperately needed.
In China, with the one-child policy, any child whose parents die is almost always adopted immediately, because children are in such short supply. So there isn't really a need for orphanages there. But in Africa, where the AIDS epidemic is wiping out whole generations, there are hundreds and thousands of orphans who have no one to turn to. And because birth control and safe sex were virtually unknown, women tended to have several children, not just the one pampered child as in China.
However, I laud your ambition and wish you the best of luck with your project.

Wow- that's quite a goal.

You might start by contacting a small group that does work like you want to do and ask questions. Larger organizations might not be so forthcoming on how they run themselves.

Also you might want to consider the government of where you would like to place your orphanage. Do they want or allow non-citizens to come into their country and do this? You need to take in customs of the people you are trying to help as well.
