I've been wondering, if you are really stressed out, can your hair turn white, not gray, white?

Yes -- I have too much knowledge of this topic. Extreme stress can cause it. So can heredity (premature grey in family). So too can hyperthyroidism. You have a nice selection of possibilities here --

I had a horrifcly painfull surgery when I was 30 during which I awakened while they were still operating. My eyes were taped shut and I was strapped down to the table. All I could do was try to scream and wiggle a bit. The screams came out as high pitched moans due to intubation. When I awoke the next day I had a white streak from roots to tip in the front of my hair. So IMO extreme stress or trauma can turn hair white.

Some people have hair so pale that it wouldn't turn grey even from aging, it would just go directly to white, so I assume that these people could also have their hair turn white from stress/trauma. (I can understand how stress could cause new hair to grow out grey or whhite, but how does it cause hair that has already formed -- the stuff at the ends of a 8-inch strand, for example -- to change too? Hair is DEAD, and stress shouldn't be able to affect it once it is formed. Can anyone explain that one?)

i'm not sure if it was stress, but my old maths teacher (he was actually pretty young), well his hair turned grey over night, but that was more the resultof a trauma because his brither and father were both killed by lightning while they were out in the fields! It was really awful! But that was trauma-related, haven't heard of it stress-related.. maybe though.. but it IS possible for hair to turn white over night!

No. Stress doesn't turn your hair white. Yet, stress can make your hair fall out.
