You could always ask him what he wants...or get him something he REALLY likes...like I was obsessed with dinosaurs as a kid.

If you want him to be excited, it has to be a toy. You can be original though. Give the house a call & talk to him & ask him what he wants. Kids love to talk on the phone & get excited when people make them feel important & more like a "big kid." If you are close to the child & don't mind spending the money, you could get him a battery-operated car he can drive in his yard. Maybe some dvds of his favorite movies. You could get him a tent w/flashlight & all the stuff he needs for camping. Even if it's only in his living room, kids love that stuff. Get a small adult size tent, though because kids always want the adults to play & trust me, it isn't easy fitting into a kids-size tent!

Maybe a fun activity with you.... Toys will never make up for good quality time with his family. Take him out and spend the whole day with him to do whatever he wants...
But if you really want to buy something... I found that whatever I bought... didn't matter... what mattered was how big was the box it came in. They played with the box more than the toy! ah... kids!!

how about something outdoors to play with? a little tykes hoop, a little bike of some kinds, a bunch of outside toys in cool container of sorts,( like nerf football, soccer ball, kite, badmitten set, plastic bat and ball-lots of fun stuff for outdoors)
a bonus is that many of these things may be on sale as summer is ending. If you live in a cold area, prone to lots of snow, get him a cool sled also ( like the frisbee kind you sit on, pretty inexpensive)

well if something that isnt a toy... boxes..kids always find things to do with boxes like crawl in them and pretend to be in caves..boxes are the greatest way to provoke the imagination of a child but go on your childs interests

If you have an old printer - or computer - or fax machine or something laying around - give him that and a screw driver and let him tear it up and take it apart. We did this for one of my friends kids. Now 2 years later he still calls my Mom and asks if she has more things for him to take apart :) He literally squeeled with joy!
