Can you get some dirt from outside? A feral cat is used to pooping in dirt. Set the kitty down on the dirt so he/she will know it's there.

Fnely shredded paper will do the trick for an emergency, but try to get litter as soon as you can. If this is a small kitten you can pick up the disposable litter box kits at most grocery or drugstores, just to get the kitten used to using his litter box. As he is growing up get a regular size litter box. For some reason most cats prefer an open litter box and I personally prefer that instead of the fancy hooded, expensive boxes. Just put the box in an out of the way place where the kitten / cat can have privacy. While the kitten is growing up provide a box or basket for him to sleep in and if possible put a teddy bear or small stuffed animal the box with him or a ticking clock wrapped in a heavy towel. The kitten will feel more secure and not meow or wander around at night. If you have other questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Sand works well. So does shredded newspaper, grass, sawdust, and dirt. If you can put some of the kitty's waste in the sand or dirt or whatever first, she'll know what the box is for and will use it.

Shredded paper towels is best. It's softer than newspaper and more absorbent. Believe it or not, some people use shredded paper towels because it doesn't give off dust which can irritate some cat's respiratory systems. Grass is not absorbent and dirt is messy.

I would go with newspaper on the floor and dirt and grass on top of it. Make a corner with towels and a hollow spot in the center so they (if you get the rest) can smash themselves together and not be so scared. Keep it kinda dark if it is night there and they might be a little quieter for the evening

grass, i'm serious. it is used to going to the bathroom in grass. so put some grass in something, show the kitten, and it might just use it. put grass in the litter box when you get it also to ease training

I thought cats didnt use the bathroom in the grass... always in dirt...
Go dig up the neighbors flower garden, that is where they seem to target! LOL

Newspaper. Cats naturally go for it. Or cardboard.
