In an average healthy adult, the volume of blood is about one-eleventh of the body weight.

InfoPlease Almanac claims that the human body contains approximately 6 quarts (or 5.6 liters) of blood. The site goes on to offer several other interesting tidbits:

In one day, your blood travels nearly 12,000 miles.
Your heart beats around 35 million times per year.
Your heart pumps a million barrels of blood during the average lifetime -- enough to fill three supertankers.

Wow. That's a lot of mileage for six little quarts.

One of my favorite explanations comes from the Underworld series. Basically there was a man who had a biological anomaly and was the first true immortal. He had two sons, one bitten by a bat (vampire), the other by a wolf (lycan/werewolf). Their immortal blood became infected, turning them into the creatures we now know in myths. In their blood is the strain of the 'virus' created. This virus will infect humans, turning them into what they were bitten by (virus can be transmitted by bite - saliva, or by giving a human their blood; both of which carry the virus). Human blood does not carry this virus and will therefore have no such effect. This is just ONE version (the one I like the best).

The adult human body contains approximately 5 liters (5.3 quarts) of blood which makes up 7 to 8 percent of total body weight. Approximately 2.75 to 3 liters of blood is plasma and the rest is the cellular portion.

Depends on a persons size. The heart is ALWAYS pumping more and more blood into your body. So it's hard to say a specific number.

"Blood is about 7% of the human body weight [1], so the average adult has a blood volume of about 5 liters..."
