I think the oil companies pump water down there to help move the oil up. And even if they didn't it would probably fill with ground water.

The weird part of some drilling is that most of the pollution comes from the drills opening up pockets of ancient sea water trapped for millenia.

Sorry I don't have an answer, but I do know that the ground level can settle lower from the water table being dropped from over-welling. I imagine removing oil could have the same effect, although modern oil drilling most likely accounts for this, whether replacing the oil with water, or the layers of earth above do not require the support of the oil anyway.

When they pump out the oil salt water moves in ,there is some gas space due to the pressure but when the gas comes out salt water replaces it.
