ok so my dog has killed a rat, she chases after birds in the park and she barks at the cats she sees out the window. I really want to get a guinea pig, but i am a little afraid she might be aggressive towards it.

can anyone come up with an idea or a way for me to test her and possibly break her of this behavior BEFORE i commit to adopting and bring the pig into our home?

I'm not sure if this helps... but my ex-girlfriend bought an rabbit 3 months ago... I have two Italian Greyhounds which lure course and chase anything that moves outside. They have killed rabbits, squirrels, and Echo somehow caught a pigeon too... But they were fine when introduced to her bunny indoors. I can't explain, they live to 'get the bunny' (it's a lure coursing thing...) But they accepted this one as a family member, sniffed it, and ran off to misbehave in other ways ;-)

Oh, that doesn't in any way mean your dog won't try to kill your guinea pig... you'll want to closely monitor any interaction they have and keep the pig in your hands if you ever intentionally let your dog get near it... even if he gets along with it ok for a while, his prey drive could kick in at ANY time... this was/is a freak accident (they've seen the bunny 3 or 4 times since the first...) and I wouldn't trust them alone with the rabbit, ever, especially outside...

Prey instinct can be a tricky one to break. If you can't train her to stop chasing animals in the park, you should not bring home a Guinea Pig.

It would stress out your dog to know its there and can't have it, and the Guinea Pig will stress from the dog watching it.

take your dog to petsmart, or petco. see if he barks at the pigs there. Mine do not have a problem but i had the pig first then got the pups.

Just leave the GP in her cage! Your dog will attack the GP, and unlike other domestic pets it cannot defend itself against a dog.
