Contact the state licensing bureau. In Florida it is called the Board of Professional Regulation. It probably has different names in different states, but they all have ALL of the data on every doctor licensed to practice.

Call the office and ask where the doctor is on staff. Many hospitals now have websites where they profile their medical staff. You may have to call the hospital to find out the name of their website. The profile should include credentials.

Could also try Google-type in his or her name. If the doctor is really good or really bad, you'll probably get some info.

Every doctor I ever went to displayed university and medical diplomas in their offices. Sometimes just commenting on them will lead to more information.

If you're wondering if the doctor has been sued before, the hospital won't tell you. Many doctors have been sued, with and without good cause. Many of those sued are competent and caring, so the OUTCOME of the lawsuit would be a better indicator of possible trouble than the fact of being sued. Not sure where to get this info-maybe CALL the AMA?

Good luck!

Your state Medical Board may have a web site for looking up doctors. Arizona has a great site (below).
