PE is professional engineer - you have to take a state-issued test to get a PE certification.

EIT is Engineer in Training.

I think you are looking for the definitions brian gave

both the PE and the EIT are exams that engineers take

When I graduated from college I took the EIT

if you pass, then in most states in the U.S. after 4 years of engineering experience you can take the P.E. exam and become a licensed engineer

Brian L is correct.

I don't know about other States, but Nebraska requires you to have one or two PE's for sponsorship, and a favorable vote from the Society of Professional Engineers before they will grant a license.

PE = profession engineer.
EIT = Engineer in training
FE = fundamentals of engineering test.

The PE test is nice to pass, as it lets you "sign off" on projects that you're in charge of, and some companies won't hire you unless you've got your PE. I work for Lockheed, where it isn't always an issue, although some divisions of the company would prefer it and encourage it.

And, you might run into: EI which stands for Engineering Intern.

My school required every engineering major take the test to graduate (with a non-zero score). The FE isn't diffuclt to pass.
