It's the caffeine. Caffeine can make headaches go away. Most migraine medications have caffeine added to them.

Caffeine is a vaso-dilator, meaning "where blood vessels in the body become wider following the relaxation of the smooth muscle in the vessel wall. This will reduce blood pressure - since there is more room for the blood. The opposite physiological process is vasoconstriction."
This allows for more blood flow to relax you and lessen tension.

do you drink caffiene on a regular basis? I tend to drink a cup or tow of coffee in the mornings- if I go without having a cup one morning, i may get a headache later in the day- caffiene withdrawals- often a coffee or soft drink (not the healthiest hing to do) will appease the headache

Most likely it was just the caffeine in the coffee. Gatorade also helps for headaches.

Coffee is known as a dialator. Some headaches can be due to diminished blood flow to the brain. as such the coffee can counteract this symptom and give you some relief.

Headaches are one symptom on caffeine withdrawal, so when you drank the coffee you got your fix. Many headache medicines have caffeine in them including Bufferin, Excedrin, et al.

Yeah, my dad is the same way. Coffee gets rid of his headaches. There's just something in coffee that is a good pain reliever.
