"the eater of..." Yes of course a government would do that, If they know you could die I would to, I would give a person 10 grand to jump off of a bridge, they would do it, and die, i get to keep the 10 grand. That is what the government does. So go join and get killed.

The war in Iraq is up to the politicians. The soldiers join to defend their country. If the politicians deem it necessary to send them to Iraq then that is what will happen. Many soldiers realize that Iraq could be over tomorrow and we could be at war with Iran or N. Korea. Iraq is just the most visible problem right now, if not the biggest. When joining the military you HAVE to look beyond current world events and understand that things will change for better or worse, but they will change. I would know. I was in a year before 9/11 even happened.

My 18-year-old son's in the Army National Guard, and most likely will go to either Iraq or Afghanistan within the next year. The sad thing people like you don't realize is that soldiers are fighting and dying for your right to run your mouth and say idiotic things about the military. My son joined at 17 because he felt he had a duty to his country and because he wanted to give something back to his country and his community. I suppose you could call that patriotism. Whatever you name it, my son and other young men and women like him answered a call that less than 1% of the population of this country feels compelled to do. He took his oath knowing full well that he could go to war and pay the ultimate price for his commitment to his nation. I don't know that I can explain fully why he chose to do this, but I am damn glad he and others like him do. Our country would be in a truly dangerous situation if people quit joining the military altogether. Instead of displaying such a naive and anti-military attitude, you should be thanking your lucky stars that people are still joining the military--if they didn't, your ungrateful butt would be drafted.
For the record, I don't support the war in Iraq. It should go without saying that I don't want my son--or anyone's child--to die in this or any other war, but that's a pretty unrealistic world view. But I do support the military (all branches) and I do thank military personnel for their service whenever I have the opportunity.

Being a TRUE American is about questioning everything. The United States was born as a result of too many taxes that favored England. Empires are born from war. The US Army has a mission '...this we'll defend...' To many people go to war without questioning the motives. When the US tried to instill democracy in Iraq,it made a miscalculation. Iraq, formerly Mesopotamia,is a lot older than the USA. A lot of soldiers have died, but the majority did not sacrifice their lives to protect the US Constitution or the American way of life:It is money. The US does NOT have the right to coerce American values to other nations. Why have many manufacturing jobs[manufacturing is what make a nation real money] gone overseas. The US was able to rebuild the military from the losses through industrial might. Why is the US Constitution weakened by War hawks{a lot of the should be called Chicken hawks since they do not volunteer for war} in the name of safety. The US Army still discriminates against minorities, but it is more subtle. Its mission is to defend against attack. A lot of the Waller family have served in the military.

on what grounds do you state we shouldnt be in this war? obviously bush was re-elected by a majority vote, and since this is a democracy 51% of the ppl wanted him in office, and think that he would make the right decisions... so in other words.... 51% of the ppl thought we should start this war... thats how democracy works..... dont worry, you will find that out in govt class when you become a senior in high school... but the reason ppl keep joining? because we need more troops, and so the military keeps bumping up enlistment bonuses, making the benifits better, all around giving a cost of living increase per say so that people like you will stop thinking that the military is evil and see that it is a great opportunity for everyone.... they will pay for you to get a degree.... they will pay you $1300 a month while your in training... and that is having your housing utilities and food paid for also... they give you your work clothes, help your family out, give you a tax break if you buy your groceries at the px or commisary..... and then when you finally get discharged they are not only awesome to have on your resume, but they send you to school for whatever you want to go into..... tell me how the military is a bad thing?

As a veteran I can only say that we join because we believe that it is people that are willing to fight and take the chance of being killed that preserve this country's freedom. If soldiers picked their wars we would be part of the Greater German-Japanese Society now. People like you have the right to spout off because of better men that protect that right
And PS if a soldier is killed idiot their family receives the insurance, the government doesn't keep it as in your stupid analogy of paying someone to jump off a bridge

you don't make a lot of sense bud. Apparently you think defending the country doesn't require soldiers getting killed. It's war, people die regardless of the reason for the war. Seems everyone has their opinion of why we are in this war, but it really doesn't matter to most people fighting in it. Some of us love our country enough to sacrifice in good and bad times, doing our duty regardless of what you might think. Every terrorist from Al-Qaida and any other idiot group that comes to Iraq to die is better than them going to America to carry out another attack. Many attacks have been stopped because of information gathered by us in both Iraq and Afghanistan, so I'm glad we are there because it is helping to secure our country. So sleep well within your cowardice under the comfort of the security that better men and women than you aren't afraid to provide.

Dude, are you embarressed that some have joined are joining and will continue to join? Why is it so hard to understand that this isn't going to go away. We're in it! We're in it for the long haul. If we stood aside and they destroyed Israel, we'd be next. They will come whether we hide are heads in the sand or not. You have two choices, 1) get some balls to at least support our troops, and yes in a time when Bush and military bashing are the "hip" thing to be doing. Nobody wants you to join, we have a completely voluteer military(to the complete amazement of the rest of the world), Or 2) get yourself a copy of the Koran, a prayer rug and a "kufi" (head cover) and get ready to convert, one way or the other. Hears a little perspective. In 1972, in Munich, at the Olympics, there was a terrorist attack and the Israeli athletes were killed. Bush was in college probably, smoking dope or whatever. In 82 I was in Lebanon in uniform and dodging bullets, in 92 or 93 they tried to blow the towers up in New York, remember. In 2001 they succeeded! What part of this is new? And if we don't do something about this, you'll be giving this same speech to your kids in twenty years. Sit back and watch quietly. And if you are going to say something, be respectful of a few dumb, ignorant knuckleheads that still think providing all americans with a safe enviornment to drive to McDonalds to get a quarter pounder and fries still means something.

Wow, do you even need to ask. There is so many benefits to joining the armed forces. For starters, not everyone thinks like you do, Bush is back in office because the majority of Americans wanted him to be, therefore you are a minority. My little brother is joining, there is numerous reasons for him to join, financial, guidance, education, experience...the list goes on. If he is just half as strong an my grandfather was when he joined, my little brother will be alright, so I don't worry.
Sure this war is hell, but what war isn't? And what war that has took place in the history of man has not been hell? none. War is Hell. That is the way it is. But if a positive outcome of war can be obtained is not war a viable route to reach that outcome? I say "Yes".
A free and democratic Iraq is more than a positive outcome, it is another ally for years and years to come, that is worth the lives of our fighting men and women today because in doing so, they will save the lives of so much more, and we will also have a new ally to stand with us when they are called upon to fight along side us in our time of need.
So I will continue to thank everyone one who joins or knows someone who joins Americans armed forces. They are doing a great service to not only themselves, but to their country, and to the entire free world as well. Thank you.

Why do people keep joining the army? Well for one, so people like you have the freedom to come on this internet site and ask questions like this one. Some people are actually patriotic and love this country of ours. What are you doing with your life? Did you go to a liberal college and sit around and bad mouth our President? I think the answer is probably "yes!"

People join for different reasons. Some people join for the promises of money and benefits. Others join to gain approval and recognition from others. Some join for the action in combat. Some noncitizens join to gain their citizenship faster. There are other reasons that people might have as well.
People who join either disagree that we shouldn't be in this war or do not care strongly enough to not be enlisted. Soldiers who are against the war may merely keep this opinion to themselves to avoid punishment.
