It cuts both ways. In the late 1990s, many television actors through the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television-Radio Actors (AFTRA) were negotiating for higher salaries and were threatening to strike. As a preliminary counter measure, many networks began dabbling in cheap, fast, programs dealing with non-union, non-contracted performers should the big name stars walk out. This was the beginning of reality TV.

Despite their worst fears, there never was a network wide strike for any of the primary broadcasters, but American audiences were taken by programs such as "Survivor", "Big Brother", and "MTV's The Real World" as they were unusual and different. So they've become a regular staple and may for many years to come.

Arugably, reality TV has cut into the opportunities for actors and other performers. But some careers have also been launched because of it, "American Idol" being one of the prime examples.

I like to watch some of the reality shows but always wondered about the people on Survivor, Big Brother, etc...what happens to their jobs? I know my employer would never let me outa work for an unsure amount of time to be on a reality show and those shows aren't worth losing my job over either. Also, there are so many TV stations out there now and for anyone who wants to be in the acting business, there will always be someone bigger and better out there so it is a tough industry, period. It has it's risks and you don't know what the future holds so they have to deal with the consequences of the jobs they choose.

well reality tv didn't take away the jobs....it just really made more people in the competitions for the jobs at hand. look and Elizabeth from the view...she was on one of the first survivors and now look where she's at in life.

if they really wanted the jobs then people need to make the shows for them

Not really no. Actually in my opinion it's getting easier and easier for people to be actors/actresses. And on the flip side, I think that alot of reality tv shoes ruin that persons career and they loose many fans.

hey, i actually enjoy watching reality tv haha...some of it actually pretty amusing (like MTV ones)...and then some of them are just cool to watch (like Fear Factor or National Treasure)...and some are just fun to watch/catch your interest (American Idol or So You Think You Can Dance)

in response to smcin728's comment...why/how does it show how American's are pathetic? some of them they show incredibly talented people!!! yes there are some that have crazy and/or weird people, but every country is like that!! its called diversity amongst people!!!!!!!!!!
