The bottom of the bottle is shaped like that to make it stronger on the bottom, so that it doesn't get dented. It isn't to cheat you out of soda, because the bottle still contains two liters, which is what you're paying for.
They used to have caps on the bottom, which I miss, because the old bottles would actually stand upright.

It is flat on the bottom. The metal shelfs with the round bars are the non-flat part of the equation. Set a two liter on a flat table and see if you have similar problems. If not, it is the shelf to blame.

I think the design was meant to cheat of out of a little soda. The reason why it won't stand up is so that you'll get digusted and drink it. Then you'll have to buy some more sooner than you intended to.

listen to RabidBunyip about the caps, that's true. I would imagine they stopped putting those caps on the bottom because it's more money and processing in packaging.

All those angles on the bottom make it stronger........they could blow up and cause damage to the other product it is shipped with otherwise.
