A male dog lifts his leg so he can urinate on vertical surfaces (the proverbial fire hydrant). Why urinate on a vertical surface? The scent of urine on a vertical surface will generally last longer than the scent on a horizontal surface. The scent is also more at nose level, so the next dog coming by will be less likely to miss the scent.

There is nothing they always do differently. I have a female dog that lifts her leg and marks fence posts and fire hydrants as well as any male dog. The first few times we took her to the vet she watered the office plants and the vet techs wouldn't believe me that she was a female without looking for themselves. Both my male and female dogs mark each other's pee spots. "Usually" male dogs lift a leg and female dogs don't but it is not "always" true.

A male dog lifts his leg up and a female dog squats. its kind of like men stand up when they pee and women sit down when the pee. When the male dog lifts its leg, its still standing up. When female dog squats, its basicly sitting down. Males (dog and man) stand up when they pee, and females (dog and woman) sit when they pee. It's a gender thing.

I see every one missed the fact that on average male dogs try to spray as high as possible on the objects sprayed. Some small dogs go to great lengths to spray as high as possible. Spray height signals size, in sort of a dominance preemption, or so it is highly suggested by the very mechanics observed. Female dogs of high testosterone load will preform similar behavior. I am working with a Border Collie that evidences this behavior.

LOVEISNOCOLOR is mostly right. When a male dog produces this behavior, he's also leaving the fact he was there. He feels good, looks good, the biggest and best and for a good time call....

a male is marking his territory from others in a way its very good but it could be embarrassing and a female doesn't because she might be looking for a mate or she would be mistaken for a male ^^

Males raise their hind leg, usually the right one. Females squat.

They lift their leg, so that they may pee on things to mark their territory.
