So far, I have been to union station and pentagon city [mall]....

Forget all the "commercial" attractions. The Zoo and all the national museums are free. See any and all of the Smithsonian museums. Natural History, American History, Gallery of Art, Air and Space. See all the war memorials, Roosevelt Memorial, etc. Go to a bookstore and get a visitor's map. Don't miss a thing!

All the Smithsonian museums are free.
Here's a map of all the museums on the mall.http://www.si.edu/visit/infocenter/mallmap.htm
The Air and Space Museum, the African Art Museum, the American Indian Museum, the Natural History Museum (see the gems and minerals!), the American History museum, and the National Gallery of Art are all interesting. The Metro has a stop called Smithsonian, that lets you off on the mall, and from there you can pick which museum you want to see. The Capitol is interesting. Mount Vernon is interesting, but you need a car.
The Zoo is part of the Smithsonian, so it's free and you can get there by Metro too.
Here's an interactive Metro Map

If you like cathedrals, take the Metro to Woodley Park and visit the Washington Cathedral....it's really lovely.
Check out the Friday Washington Post for it's Weekend section that tells you everything that's going on in the area. There's always some festival or something interesting to see.

The following metro stations are surrounded by safe areas that have lots of great stuff to do:

- Smithsonian station - walk out of this station on to the national mall area (lots of tourists and security), great museums all around you.

- Dupont circle north exit - this is a very hip area of town, people are friendly, lots of diversity. Walk out of the north exit and check out the coffee shops and bookstores on connecticut ave (if you don't like gay people - don't go here :)

- Foggy bottom - it's a few short blocks to an area called georgetown (the hangout mecca for college students). If you're a young college student then you'll probably love it here. You're surrounded by George washington university, tons of hip stores, restaurants - everything. Stores are a bit pricy along M street but if you go up a few blocks on Wisconson Ave - you'll find some funkier and cheaper shops where you can buy items from all over the planet.

Also - check out the visitors section of the online washington post for info on the latest exhibits at museums etc - it's in the middle of this page http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/cityguide/?nav=globetop

I stayed at the Key Bridge Marriott. Its about 2 blocks from the metro, and there is a shuttle that stops at the hotel that will take you right to a Metro station. That same shuttle will take you to Georgetown where there are great restaurants and great shopping.

All museums are free. Go to the mall area (that is what they call the museum area in DC) and you'll be fine.
