Don't get me wrong, my (full) last name is long and European also, I don't mind their names. I am just wondering why it was thought best for Rocky to do it and not the current champions?

Rocco was born in the USA and he was trying to assimilate. Those other fighters are Russians and no amount of name change will mean a thing.

During Rocky's time it was not looked at as such a big deal as many fighters had different boxing names than their real names a lot like Hollywood actors because it sounded better or was catchier to the public.

it was a diffrent time,and rocky marciano just sounds better than rocco francis marchegiano.there was a boxer nicknamed "the jew killer" in the 50's and that would not go over well these days.

Because the announcer could not pronounce his surname after about 16 fights.
