used as a corrosive detergent to get grease off mechanics floors and that it has an injuious effect on the enamel of teeth and enters the body through gum tissue and does further internal damage. Sounds like a nasty thing to have in ones toothpaste, not to mention shampoo, etc. What are your thoughts on this? I know it isn't necessary as I found a toothpaste without it.

SLS is SOAP. It's a surface tension reducing agent which helps the WATER lift junk off of your teeth, your hair, or (apparently) your garage floor when used in sufficient quantity.

Here you go. Even the nature freaks all embrace Tom's of Maine toothpaste. This is what they say about SLS. Note that they refer you to a page dealing with the misinformation "circulating on the internet" and call it a hoax.

Honestly, if we listen to all of these shocking reports, we will be afraid to breathe, drink the water, eat anything, wear anything. That can't be healthy to be afraid of everything. We're all going to die of something.
