I know some people who can afford to spend the £2 they spend each week on the lottery. They see it as entertainment and enjoy the thrill. Others like the social aspects of their bingo night and limit their spending. In their eyes, it's a better return than an evening in the pub or at the movies. Some of the work I've been done has been made possible by Big Lottery monies, so I'd be a hypocrite to complain too loudly. But I do agree with a friend's assessment -- the lottery is a tax on the poor and desperate. For-profit gambling is even worse, that's all about putting more money in the pockets of wealthy owners and share-holders. I despise the underhanded suck you in tactics of big gaming. But I'm not bothered by small-scale use amongst those who can afford it as an evening's entertainment.

It might surprise you to find that many Christians will do gambling for the entertainment value. It's wrong when it becomes an obsession or if a person gambles to provide an income (very few people truly make an income gambling).

I say good luck to people, not because I believe in luck as in a spiritual sense, but I say it to wish a person that they will be successful.

I don't gamble...I work too hard for my money. Even if I did, I can't find any scriptures that say, "Thou shalt not gamble." There's one that does say, "Thou shalt not have any gods (idols) before me."

I also don't say "good luck." I don't need luck, I've got God / Jesus and I know the end of the story.

So, I must ask...what is your source?

I don't gamble. I believe we have free will. Saying "good luck" is a cultural thing.

I used to wish people "luck" without thinking through the ramifications of what the hearer might think about luck. Once I thought through things, however, I changed the wording to "God bless you" or "May God bless you." Good question.

Why not?

Is throwing $2 into the lottery harmful? No its not. It won't drive you mad with greed and lust. Most lotteries even throw a handful of their proceeds to charities.

I don't gamble, play the lottery, do bingo or say Good Luck. Luck is from the root word lucifer, and lucifer is not good, saying good luck is saying that lucifer is good.
