Catholic stands for Universal. There was the western Roman catholic church and the eastern orthodox church they were divided along the same lines as the division in the Roman empire. The Roman catholic church was the only church in Europe or official church until the the reformation. A movement that started within the church to reform corruption. this started with Martin Luther. The reformation led to protestant Christians. Because its was a reform movement they did not see them self's as a separate church so they in the apostles creed believe in the Catholic(universal church)
SO there is Roman Catholics eastern orthodox catholics and some others who are catholic
then there are the protestant churches like Presbyterians and Baptist and a whole bunch of others.

If you want to know what a catholic is do a search for the apostles creed and catholic catechism but the apostles creed pretty much sums it up.

There are other answers here that are outright LIES I am not a roman catholic But there is a KKK lie and I hope you know what KKK stands for that Catholics are loyal to the pope before GOd its a lie told by racists and you can picj the bigots out by there answers here. Shame on them.

Like any Christian faith, they believe in Jesus as the son of God as well as God himself. They believe he rose from the dead and will return. In this particular Christian faith, you will be required to attend mass, the ritual that commenerates the last supper and where supposedly wine is turned into Christ's blood and bread into his body. The requirement is that you attend every Sunday and holyday. If you fail you had better recieve the sacrement of confession. Your church will tell you that you will go to hell otherwise. You will also be required to abstain from eating meat on fridays during lent, (but fish is OK.) Lent occurs between a date in mid February called Ash Wednesday and Easter in early spring. I don't believe you are required to attend mass on Ash Wednesday. But if you do, you will recieve a spot on your forhead from a priest who will recite the chant,"remember man that you are dust and on to dust you shall return." The most devote of Catholics will spend the rest of the day with that spot on their forhead. The leader of the church is the pope and he will say that birth control is not permitted except for the rythem method which is a method where the married couple only has sex when she will not get pregnant. This is not a well obeyed rule by the Catholics. The pope will also say that divorce is wrong. But Catholics will work around that with something called an anulment. They just need to assert that adultry was involved.

I was born and raised Catholic and I don't recomend it.

Catholic is just one of the many denominations that believe in God.

If you are a student then you should know the value of studying for yourself. I suggest you get a Bible , study it, and start visiting some churches.

Being "religious", by the way has nothing to do with belonging to a particualr denomination.

If you want to know what religious is read the book of James in the Bible. It actually defines religious for you.

What made you decide to come to this section? I notice you have not been here before?

A summary of Catholic beliefs is contained in the Nicene Creed (from the year 325):

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures: He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

For a complete description of what Catholics believe, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/index.htm

With love in Christ.

a Catholic is an original Christian. The Catholic Chuch is the church Jesus Christ established himself. We definitely believe in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. You should go to a Catholic mass, check it out! If you have the option, go to a teen mass, they're more modern. Good for you, you should be curious about your religion!

Catholics are the false Christian religion that developed after the last Apostel John Died on the Island of Patmos as a prisoneer of the Romans and the Jewish Sanhedran.
With in less thana thousand years of CHRISTS Ressurection they developed a false religion that defies all hope, The chose to refuit the Scriptures of one God, and worship a made up trinity.
The Bible said that Only God should be called FATHER...Yet the priests who molest children DEMAND that title of their worshipers. call them Father.
ACatholic believes in a Catisim (sorry Sp. is wrong) A book, NOT THE BIBLE,( just a book written by men to maintain rule, for centurys, that including murdering those who would have spread the Bible in the common langueges of Man instread of hiding it in High Latin)
Collecting Tything before prayers are dispenced is wrong
Baptizing of infants who do not understand the idea of commitment is wrong (Do not forget, Jesus, himself waited untill he was an adult for baptism)
Please do this, Read Your Bible Daily and wait for your Prayers through Jesus to his Father Thet will be heard.
I also have a Question for you to ponder: If the Catholic priest onTHIS side of the war said GOD BLESS AND PROTECT THE TROUPS Just as the Hindue or Muslam shouts in exuberance to destroy aand protect the troups from the protection of their God....WHO does God Protect??? Ask me, and will tell all.Karen
