I don't think all people do. Myself, I have always preferred Jack Daniel's. Just tastes better to me. But Beam ain't bad in a pinch...

Jim Beam is a Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey·: A distinctive product of the U.S. made from a fermented mash containing at least 51% corn. It must be produced at no more than 160 proof and aged in new, charred oak barrels for at least 2 years. (examples: Maker's Mark, Jim Beam, Old Grandad)
Jack Daniel is Tennessee Whiskey : Straight whiskey distilled in Tennessee from a fermented mash containing at least 51% corn, then leeched through charcoal before aging. (examples: Jack Daniel's, Dickel) ,but not a bourbon. The main difference is the process to make each. There is a very distinct taste difference. My preference is Jack. I've been to the distillery in TN and I got to see how it's made. It's like the difference between Cajun and creole cooking.

As with any drink, there are slight to extreme differences in how a drink is made and the taste. A bourbon drinker would tell you that there is a more earthy taste to J.D. than Jim Beam, but could not tell the difference between a Budweiser and a Heineken. The recipe of any alcohol is slightly different, and only after tasting them repeatedly (not condoning drinking with wanton abandon) can you really discern a difference. Just like wine, cheese and other connoisseurs (not sure of that spellling), people that drink something repeatedly can notice small difference. If you are not a coffee drinker, don't they all taste the same? Same goes for bourbon, whiskey, wine, cheese, vodka, tequila......you get the point.

Notoriety and availability.

Jack Daniels is what's at the bars.

Some people may argue taste, but people who drink whiskey usually don't care what's in their glass after the third shot-Jim Beam, Jack Daniels or otherwise.

Jack has a higher Ethel alcohol level than Jim which gives it a different taste. Jack has little more burn and not as bland as Jim. For those you are wondering Ethel alcohol level is not the same as alcohol percentage

I don't dislike Jim Beam, Jack is just what I've always had. It was what we always snuck out of the liquor cabinet at my buddy's house when we were 15 almost like every day lol. I've just grown accustomed to it and I love it

I'll drink either. I prefer Jack. My father-in-law prefers Jim. I'm a happy camper either way.
