It's safe to put it down the drain. You're sewer company is equipped to handle this.

I just empty it into an old coffee can or ice cream bucket, seal it, and throw it into the garbage. I wouldn't pour it in the drain, it may still cause build up in the pipes, not to mention the odors! Also, pouring outside is not a good idea unless you are willing to put up with the critters, raccoons, skunks, even bears that will come looking for food.

What I do is let it cool to room temperature, place it in a container, and freeze it. Then on garbage day, out it goes. It is non-toxic, and non-polluting, and is actually safe to pour into your garden in the cooled, liquid form.

Put it in and old tin can (i.e. soup can) and let harden if possible and then dispose. If oil is still in liquid state save old water bottles with lid.

we use it to add shine to our neighbors lawn.of course it has to be done at night. neighbors tend to not understand. so what they don't know won't hurt them. Oh yeah, the added benefit is that all the dogs in the neighborhood know exactly where to do their dogly duties.
