OS 10.3 or later has built in compression/decompression. Just control-click on a file and choose "create archive...", and it will compress that object or folder into a zip file. Decompressing a zip file is as simple as double clicking on the zip file. Where it places the uncompressed version in the same location as the compressed.

However, there is software that you should install. It's Stuffit Expander. That allows decompression of all sorts of file types.

You don't need any software to be able to compress files if you're running Mac OS X 10.3 or later. OS X has a great feature which lets you create zip files from within the operating system. All you have to do is right-click (or Ctrl-click) on the file or folder you want to zip, and then select "Create Archive" from the list menu. A new file will be created with a ".zip" extension, which can easily be unzipped on both PCs and Macs.

trying searching for and downloading winrar.exe. WinRar decompresses .rar files, which are the Mac's version of zip files. There are sites out there from which you can download an evaluation copy of winrar, like you used to be able to do with WinZip (now you can only download a 30 -day WinZip executable, and after 30 days you have to pay for it).
