My dogs go nuts. I have had to actually ban them from my house! They will fight and bite each other over them. No other problems with food toys or attention in fact they eat together twice a day, (80pds, 10pds,and 7pds) no aggression. What is rawhide? Dog crack?

I am shocked that no one has mentioned that formaldahyde is used as rawhide preservative in some countries.

I don't give them to my dogs, but not because they fight over them. (Actually, it was kind of funny in the days when I did let them have chewies to watch the elaborate tricks they tried to play on each other to steal the other one's toy.)
My objection to them is that if the dog bites off a big chunk, it can become an intestinal obstruction or a choking hazard. Also, a few years ago, there was a problem with imported chewies carrying a virus. That's when I stopped letting my dogs have them.
A funny dog story about rawhides:
My street-smart old Husky/shepherd cross Max desperately wanted a chewie that my search dog Cody had. Nothing was working until Max suddenly ran to the back door, barking his head off. Naturally, Cody dropped his toy to see what was going on. . .and Max snuck back into the livingroom and grabbed it.
Cody was steamed when he figured out that he'd been had, so he waited a minute and then ran to the back door, barking like a maniac. Max continued to chew on the bone, and eventually, poor Cody stuck his head around the door with this, "Hey, this isn't how it's supposed to work!" look.
I swear that ornery old Max gave him an evil "Who do you think taught you that trick, DUMMY!" grin!

Rawhide is not good for dogs and if they break off a piece and swallow it whole, it will not digest in the intestinal tract and will require surgical intervention to have it removed.
If your dogs love the taste of the rawhide, try the ground up and re-pressed together rawhide treats, they are smaller treats and the dogs can chew them up like a biscuit so there is no long chew session and no bones laying around for dog to fight over.
I like to buy the ground rawhide sticks that look like slim jims - the dogs love them and they gobble them up one two three, this way they still get to enjoy the flavor they crave and there are no more fights.

I don't know why dogs like rawhide so much, I'm guessing it's just the flavoring and the bone-like texture. However, I have heard and read that rawhide is not good for most dogs. I've provided a link with more information on that.

I have banned rawhides from my house. As everyone above has mentioned, they can cause intestinal blockage, not to mention the small pieces being caught in their throats.
Another reason I have banned them is I have schnauzers. Have you ever tried to get raw hide rimenents out of a beard? FORGET ABOUT IT!
I give my pups the flavored nylabones. They Love Them!

I really didn't give rawhides, per se---mostly bullies and flips. We're trying to get my dog to stop licking her leg and vet said to get her chewing rawhides to keep her busy. My dogs have no fights over treats, as one is extremely submissive and won't even touch it til other dog has finished. However, I was keeping a lab and when I first was getting ready to give out rawhides, he suddenly jumped up and grabbed it out of my hand and gave chase. That surprised me.

My dogs love them 2 but make sure that u watch them when they eat them because they can get quite soft and slippery and they can choke so supervise them and never leave the bones out when u r not home to avoid choking( I have seen 2 many dogs choke due 2 rawhide). Also separate them when they eat them 2 avoid aggression issues. They LOVE them and let them have their own special personal space when they r enjoying them.

i gave one to my dog and she chewed it so much her gums were bleeding. i took it away immediately and now give her a kong with a treat stuffed inside and she loves that just as much. My boyfriends brothers dog (a chow) would steal rawhide bones from his dads dog(a rottie!) and bury them. The rottie never minded. It was funny.

It is hide from animals. I give it to my dog whenever I think she needs a special treat. She thinks of nothing else while she has one. She gets a dreamy look in her eyes and holds it down with her front paws and chews to her hearts content.

.Dogs may love them, but have had more than one Vet tell me not to give them to dogs at all. They can cause intestinal blockage.
Pig Ears are better and easier for dogs to chew up and swallow and will not create health problems
