Two very different things. Volcanic ash is mineral in origin, not organic. More gases get released with a volcano. The ash goes higher into the atmosphere and stays in the air much longer. The consistency of the ash is different. Finally, with volcanoes you get many different types of ash, depending on the geologic make-up of the lava, whereas fires only give wood ash. Everythign from the color to the pH can be different from one eruption to the next.
