They are a Christian group which puts a high emphasis on peace, simplicity and community. It is expected that members live a simple lifestyle but there is a great deal of variation in what constitutes simple. Some Mennonites use horses and buggies for transportation; some have electric guitars in church. Mennonites are pacifists and do not fight in wars but accept alternative service or prison instead. Mennonite communities tend to be very tightly knit. They often socialize within the church group but they are friendly with their non-Mennonite neighbors, with the exception of former Mennonites. Women are expected to wear a headcovering, most often a small lace cap.

Salvation is by faith. Believers are baptised as adults. The communion of the Lord's Supper is often offered only quarterly as it is not seen as a sacrament but as a way of remembering Christ's death.
