depends what price range you are looking at. ..blocks, legos, or age appropriate puzzles...basketball or other ball he can throw around outside...maybe a tricycle or something he can play with outside...what about one of those covered sandboxes so the sand doesnt become the neighborhood cat litter box? hope these ideas help.

For a stuffed animal, Curious George is a classic- there are also books that go with it.
For toys, get Duplo blocks-- they are made by Lego, but are larger, so no choking hazard. Kids that age LOVE building & knocking down stuff! They also have all kinds of "add-on" sets that go with the blocks- zoo animals, race cars, people....

Try the Consumer Products Safety Commision ... they have a WEB site that rates the "Kids Toys" to tell ya which ones are safer or more dangerous .... the obvious stuff is looses eyes that are really button sewn on....small parts that can be swolled ....but they have the other goodies ... like bright colors that are from other countries and have lead based pants ... Lead in kids or adults ... bad news ..lead poisoning ... nasty brain issues ...other things are flame retardent coatings that burn like crazy or are harmful .... A good place to check !!

Pick something the kid likes .... favorite TV show character...... like the man says "Bob the Builder" or "Elmo" works

What is he interested in. What movies does he enjoy. There are so many wonderful stuffed animals for little guys now. Our son loved his stuffed bear.
Just get something that he is interested in.

you should get him a nice rubber animal. that way he won't be able to inhale fluff or to swallow parts of the toy. maybe a dolphin, a whale or a fish would be very appropiate so that he could play with them while he's taking a bath. it's very funny for them
