My European friends always criticize the USA. They say the aftermath of hurricane Katrina was racially motivated and most white Americans are bigots. I accuse them of the same exact bigotry because of their anti-American sentiments. So, is one being a bigot when he calls someone else a bigot?

Well, actually, you're probably right, insofar as they are generalizing that Americans are racist / bigoted ... and racism/bigotry is itself a generalization of characteristics based on race. So, they're generalizing based on nationality, in concluding that white Americans' tend to generalize based on race.

But, this doesn't necessarily mean that calling "one" a bigot is bigoted.

If you are in fact a bigot, calling YOU that, as opposed to calling a class of people (Americans) bigots ... is not a generalization.

Everyone is technically a racist, a sexist, and a bigot. We all made conscience and unconscious judgments about the people around us, without having to base those judgments on anything other than appearance. It's normal, why fight it?
