...seem to be the biggest critics of overweight women? It's really the oddest thing. I hear them talking about certain women being overweight and these men are way more overweight than the women they are talking about! It's really bizarre. You would think it's these trim, fit men talking about them. How can they talk when they don't have their own weight under control? Are they lean in their own minds? Really, really strange! Any insights?

Thank you for your all your great answers. There were so many good ones it was hard to choose the best. It's amazing how many smart insightful people there are out there willing to take time out to share their perspectives. The one I've chosen made me laugh - it reminded me of the Dave Chappelle skit with the blind black klansman who can't look in the mirror because he's blind and see that he's black himself. I guess people have a lot of blind spots out there.

Yes, I know what you mean. My brother's friend acts as if he is
slim & trim and he has a beer belly that hangs over his pants so far I am sure he can't see his own feet. I think they just don't ever look into a mirror.

Yes, it is crazy!

I don't know if you ever saw the reality show called Average Joe. Well, they bring all these less than attractive men out for one beautiful woman to get to know and pick from. Kind of like a Bachelorette show, but without the gorgeous guys.

Anyway...my point is that while watching this show I heard some of the comments these guys made about women. Even though they were just "average" (below average in many cases) they all seemed to think that they should be able to get model-like women. Then they complained that they were single, and just couldn't figure out why. Duh! Do you think it might be because you've set your standards too high and you might want to think about looking for some of the average girls out there, who might have more brains and work ethic than t!ts and @ss?????

Sorry, got into a bit of rant, but I don't know why these guys all think they should get the model-woman, when they certainly are no models themselves.

I put much of the blame on the media, distorted societal standards as well as pornography, which is the closest many of them ever get to having sex!

Men do this a lot, it's quite pathetic really. They can be completely hypocritical, it makes me laugh. They want these perfect women when they are so far from perfect, they are in fantasy land. But they do it to build up their own egos and make themselves feel better, because they are so insecure about their own weight. They transfer their own issues to someone else, so they don't have to deal with it. Women seem to be an easy target, and maybe they feel talking about other men's appearance might give the wrong impression. But someone needs to point out to them, that they should just focus on themselves and stop focusing on other people's flaws. HTH.

I know exactly what you mean! I have a friend who does this, and he is by no means thin. Double standard, I guess. Ever noticed how, on TV, most of the lead actors on sitcoms are usually just average, even a little goofy-looking? Yet their wives or girlfriends are always really pretty and thin.

See, it's the man's job to make the money. And it's the woman's job to make the money, cook, clean, raise the kids AND look good doing it. Weaker sex, my butt.

It is possible that these overweight men are simply trying to deflect attention away from themselves. They are out of control of their own appearance and feel the need to sharpen the spiritual claws by taking down someone else. The fit, trim men don't.

I know! It's ridiculously hypocritical. I see this a lot and it makes me want to scream. I think it has to do with how society, the media and entertainment industry seems to think it's much more important for a woman to be thin, attractive and look good. Her brains and ability are secondary. For men it's the opposite. Look at movies and TV. The vast majority of actresses are thin and beautiful. That's not true with actors. Many of them are average-looking guys not GQ models. Hmm.

Well, the way I think about this is that the fit and healthy men don't care about overweight women. It acually helps them to gain popularity and other fame... Or maybe is just that critics are mostly overweight cause they eat too much and fit men are well...non critics...

It's just arrogance. Put it to them and they will shut up very quickly. You would find that on their own they wouldbe happy to go out with the woman they are criticizing as part of the group. Very strange.

Sorry on behalf of the male species.

Really? I have never heard of this. However, I do know that over weight men tell the best jokes and are typically like-able people!
