Do cockatiels have sex or does the male ferilize the eggs or what?
Do they have to mate for the female to lay her first eggs?

Yes Cockatiels have sex. Very noisey sex. just like humans the male fertilizes the females eggs internally. Many female cockatiels begin to lay eggs when they reach breeding age or older. This does not necessarily mean that your pet requires a mate.

It goes like this:
Boy 'tiel sings to the girl. It is lovely to them, but you'll get tired of it. This goes on and on.

If you give them lots of daylight and a nest box, they will come into breeding condition fairly quickly. You won't know the difference, but they will.

One day she will start making a different sort of "chuckling" call, and she will crouch low on the perch holding her back level. This is her invitation. He will stand on her back and they will manuever their tails until their cloacas touch. (The cloaca is the hole that everything passes through: poop and pee combined, and eggs for females, sperms for males) Things get really exciting for them and they make a LOUD call during the heat of passion. Then he'll jump off.

The sperm gets passed from him to her through the cloaca during the hanky-panky. Once inside her it travels up towards where the egg is formed. It fertilizes the egg, then the hard calcium shell is depositied before the egg is laid.

If all goes well a few weeks later you have baby chicks.

A NOTE: The male's sperm can stay alive and able to fertilize for much longer than you might think. She can lay fertile eggs for quite some time after he is removed. Of course she needs him to help take care of the kids, so don't shop him around to other girls. He's needed at home.
