I have a number of house plants. Some have some damaged leaves. I am curious, but will damaged leaves actually repair themselves or stay damaged. I have a palm with a number of brown leaves, some curled, and some ripped. I have a dieffenbachia with a half missing leaf and one that is broken open in the center so the leaf is wilted in half.
Will these leaves actually heal themselves?

No, the plant will reabsorb all the nutrients it stores in them, drop that leaf, and grow new ones.

A torn leaf can lead to insect infesation, or risk the health of the plant. So they drop the leaves and grow new.

They do not repair the damage, or "heal" in terms that we use for the human body. They can form a crusty "scab" like covering with sap, but the leaf will not be whole and undamaged again.
