A district is an area which can include several different schools. It pretty much depends on what city/ state you live in. I know that California has several districts splitting up one or two cities, while places like Washington and Nevada have one for a few different cities.
A district supplies children with rules and regulations. They distribute funding and make some decisions about the curriculum. They enforce the laws passed on by the supreme court and such regarding schools as well.
There are many different school districts in the nation.

In a large city, there can be a few school districts. School districts are divided in the same way that states are divided, just on a much smaller scale. All schools in a school district have the same administration and rules. In a city, a school district may have several high schools, several middle schools, and several elementary schools. In a rural area there might be only one building that houses k - 12 and the administration. And of course there is every size in between. The school district I grew up in consisted of an elementary school and a highschool. The area has grown so large now that they have separated the high school into a high school and a middle school.

All public and private schools within a specified area are in the same school district. The private schools have to report their student's progress to the public school district.

A school district is an organization usually created by the governent that makes major decisions for a certain number of school in an area such as a city. Small cities and towns don't usually have this because it costs a lot. I live in Toronto, Canada and our school district is call TDSB (Toronto District School Board).

While there can be numerous school districts in a big city (religious, private, pubic, etc.); typically there is only one PUBLIC school district in a city. Public school districts are similar to local governments.

Northern states tend to have school districts by cities or towns; while southern states tend to have school districts by county.

It's just a line saying you kids go here and you on the otherside go there. Generally they conform with cities or counties.
