Yes! But I'm from Argentina and here we drink mate differently (although it can also be prepared as tea bags, in which case it's called "mate cocido" ...that would be "cooked mate" or something like that).
I made a 360 blog entry about mate some time ago, you're very welcome to read it here:

Mate is made from the dried leaves of the plant Ilex paraguariensis, a relative of your Northern Hemisphere holly plant. I'm not aware of any specific uses for it (it's not a "medicinal" tea) but it's a natural soft stimulant, and many people find it invigorating. It can chase sleep away, but its effects are milder than coffee (though it may eventually cause heartburn to people with stomach problems).
Here in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil, mates are what we drink all day long (when it's hot, we take cold mate, known as "tereré").
It is a rich source of minerals such as iron (2.9 mg/100 g), magnesium (70 mg/100 g), and potassium (128.5 mg/100 g), as well as vitamins (thiamine - B1, and piridoxin - B6).
Of course it has no fats and only 3.63 % of sugars.
** Note: I'm copying these values from the yerba package I have right in front of me, the brand is "Playadito".
Hope this helps :-)

Yerba Mate tea can be used for weight loss, sleep problems, and energy. Though, I don't know if it actually works for any of those things, and it sounds like it may have some not-so-nice side effects. Drink carefully.

Hola! MybishiPa!
La Yerba comes from the Guarani people now mostly in Paraguay. It is a stimulant and has many vitamins and minerals and considered overall to be a very healthy tea. These people have used it for centuries much like we drink coffee but..much more. It is sort of like a meditation of sorts for them almost a religious experiences....brings back some very pleasant memories for me.

for decades, or perhaps now, in some sectors, yerbamate' replaced into (is) idea to include caffeine. It seems that mateine isn't clone of caffeine; it differs from caffeine in some truly dramatic strategies.
