Melon - depends on the kind. Watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot on the bottom where it rested on the ground, should feel heavy, and should make a nice solid thump when you knock a knuckle against it. Canteloupe should smell ripe at the stem end.
As for corn, I peel back the husk and look at it, even stick a fingernail in one of the kernels. It should be juicy, not dry.

For Melons there are three ways to determine ripeness:
1) Smell, does it smell like a cantaloupe, watermelon, etc.
2) Thump it, it should sound hollow or dull thumping sound
3) I consider this the best way. The stem end should be soft enough to have a little give. Not mushy, just not as firm as the rest of the melon.
Corn: Best way is to pull back the husk, just a bit to see if the corn looks plump and fresh, not dried out, and not full of worms.

The stem end of the melon would desire to offer in basic terms a splash once you press your thumbs into it. As for corn, i think alongside the ear and if it feels "finished" I take it. If the husks are too thick I pull lower back a pair husks and verify the precise of the ear's kernels.

Husk your ears of corn at the store - saves you the trouble at home and you can see how good the ears are. Look out for any ears that have brown spots or spots that look like they've been "eaten away." Buy the white and yellow, over the only yellow ears if you can. It's usually sweeter. :)

With watermelons, the stem should be completely dried up, and it should sound hollow when you thump it. With corn, the ears should be filled out right to the end, the kernels should not be too large, and when pierced, the kernels should exude a milk like substance.

don't eva buy a squishy melon. if you press hard on it, it should not make a permanent dent. that's how u tell it's ripe.
ears of corn are best fresh. buy large ears, without a lot of wilt on the leaves.
good luck!
