I AM the Chef .. and would suggest that perhaps it is the quality of the restaurant (or lack thereof) that results in the kind of behavior that you folks are describing.
At my restaurant we (first of all) have Very Little food sent back - as we give it the finest preparation, plus a quality check, before it ever leaves the kitchen.
On the rare occasion that something is returned, you can bet that I am going to personally visit that patron and apologize and do what I can to make it right.
Not everyone is perfect all the time and 'gross' tactics, as a retaliation, are simply immature and unprofessional.

Don't EVER! be rude to a server and send food back. I worked in the food industry and bad things might and do happen to your food behind the kitchen doors. Most of the bad things involve various "body fluids." Use your imagination here. If you have to send food back, be as polite and nice as can be.

i've worked in a resturant many times and can tell you from experience, it's just not even worth it most of the time. I'd messed with food a couple times, dropping food on the nasty ground and picking it up is common place, you dont even have to return your order to get that, I never saw any satisfaction in trying to get a laugh off of spitting in someones food or whatever, it's pretty immature and stupid in the first place, I mean, you $^%&ed their order up not them, so why is any of that more than the cooks fault?

Tricky question, I have never sent anything back because I'm afraid they will spit in it. That may sound silly to some people but I have worked in many places and some chef's get pretty pissed off!

I think as long as you're polite about it, you're safe. I've sent food back because it was overcooked or undercooked, but I "asked" the waiter, and was as nice as I could be. If you throw a hissy fit, raise your voice, and are rude, you can bet you'll be eating some spit.

I think chef's are very particular and if something wasn't prepared right or it's not to the diner's satisfaction, they won't mind fixing it. - Keep in mind, I'm talking about actual restaurants, not McDonalds or BK.

don't ever send food back. I saw a story on one of those news shows (20-20 or primetime). Every chef says never send it back.
