He's really not that great... he just has a TV show edited to make him look great... he has a lot of Charisma. I don't mean to imply he isn't good, he is good, but he's NOT great...

If you want to become a GREAT dog training/behaviorist you have two basic options. Go to vet school and then specialize in canine behaviorism (usually requires an extra year to specialize in anything...) Or go to a school like triple crown dog training academy. There are others out there, but I feel it is the best... http://www.triplecrowndogs.com/trainers_academy/index.htm

He is actually not that good. He uses a technique called flooding. If used on the wrong dog you could end up with a severe dog bite. Also he gets the dogs initial attention(shuush) but he doesnt redirect the behavior. Without redirection the initial 'catch' will eventually be ignored by the dog. Imagine someone tugging on your shirt for a second. ...it will get your attention...now imagine someone tugging on your shirt every 3 seconds all day long. You will eventually tune it out. Some of his ideas are ok but applied incorrectly..for example the Vizsla that was allowed to pull him on rollerblades. The dog wore a regular flat buckle collar...not only did he teach the dog to pull against his leash, but he also could have caused damage to the dogs neck muscles and spine. If you want to become a trainer take a look at: http://www.apdt.com/. If you want some really good reading material on dogs and dog behavior try these first: Jean Donaldson>The Culture Clash : Karen Pryor>Dont shoot the dog: Pat Miller> The Power of Positive Dog Training: Dr. Ian Dunbar>Before and After Getting your Puppy, How to teach a new dog old tricks, Dr. Dunbars Good Little Dog Book...these should get you started on the right track....from there you can get even more in depth.

Dog and horse whisperers have a natural affinity with these animals, and could almost be considered psychics of sorts. Therefore, it would be near impossible to acquire the spiritual attributes of a whisperer. However, you could become a dog trainer, and become so knowledgable in this area, that you build up a great reputation because of the skills youve acquired over the years.

Well it's not that hard!
Dogs talk to us all the time.We just have to use more than our ears to listen to them and have some good old common sense.
Show the dog respect and consideration treating him the same as you want to be treated. And remember that puppies are not all that different than babies and need to be treated as such and adult dogs are not that different from having a 2-4yr.old around until the day they die.So you have to have patience.Lots of it!

I believe it is a god give gift, I also believe anyone with any perception for animals may be able to develop some of the skills he has by reading his books and other things he has written. I have tried several of his suggestions with my dogs and other dogs and they work if you take the time to do them .

I believe that alot of his methods are very unconventional. I dont like the way he treats the animals alot of the time. I quit watching the show. Some of the theories he has seem to make sense to a degree but thats about it for me.

Why would you want to? The chance of you getting seriously injured or ruining your dog by following his practices is very high. What he recommends in terms of dominance rituals can get your face ripped off.

Years of experience. That are many good trainers out there who use the same common sense principles, they just aren't on tv.

And no, the clueless 'furbaby'/PeTA crowd don't like him.

He's not that great. Many of his tactics are outdated. He is a showman plain and simple.
Here is a link to check out.It is only one of three public articles about him recently.
