OK; If you are shouting right into someone's ear - they can't hear you AT ALL if the ambient noise is at 129 dBA.

actually, at a lower noise level than that, but it gives you part of the idea.

FROM http://www.howstuffworks.com/question124.htm
* Near total silence - 0 dB
* A whisper - 15 dB
* Normal conversation - 60 dB
* A lawnmower - 90 dB
* A car horn - 110 dB
* A rock concert or a jet engine - 120 dB
* A gunshot or firecracker - 140 dB

that Jet Engine one is not entirely accurate. the noise of a jet engine is usually measured on a different dB scale. Since the firecracker/gunshot is an instantaneous noise, it might be measured on a different dB scale. Sorry i don't remember all the details.

The other sounds are from the dB A scale, which is the one weighted toward human hearing sensitivities.

A Jackhammer Puts out 160 Decibels. If you Go Clubbing, 130 is Normal for a Disco or Club. Get the Idea.
