The simple answer is that all Muslims beliefs are based upon Quran and since Quran presents Genies as another creation just like angels, muslims believe that Genies do exist.

The jinn are described in the Qur'an, as you have indicated. They are believed to be creatures made of smokeless fire by God. They have the power to possess humans, among many other characteristics.

It makes about as much sense to ask "Why do Christians believe in demons."

That may be a lot of Hollywood bunk, so, I would ask some one who is a Muslim, before I would believe a lot of nonesense that Hollywood would have us believe!

Not only muslims believe in genies. There are genies in some of the jewish folklore also.
They are spirits...They live in the desert and sometimes hang out in wells or fall into wells I'm not sure, perhaps they are attracted to water?!

i'll tell u honey.look,we've a book for our religion it comes from our god.sure u know it it's the qu'ran.the jinn god told us alot of things about them because there are bad jin and good.bad jin can be bad and not kind with us,may be they kill too or may be they can make us mad.so god tells us about them to becarefull and stay away from them.sure u'll say how can we stay away from them and we can't see them?the answer is they can appear to who want to appear to and do what they want.long years before at the time of messengers they was appearing as people but they were afraid from a messengernamed(solaiman),because god gave hi a power he can use it to the jin.so they are afraid from him but now he dead so they are free.

I've heard the ancient Hindu tradition is in favor of this belief.

Perhaps you could ask are there actually supernatural beings?

Are there human like beings with the power of gods?

Are there ghosts, angels or demons?

Who knows my muslims believe what they believe? Who knows why anyone believes in a long storybook hundreds of years old that nobody can truely understand without interpertation from somebody in a funny uniform that lives in a funny house.
