Spending “your life with them” implies a life mate, usually a marriage, but you seem to be describing Jesus. If you are asking a relationship question, then it is misleading to put in the religion and spirituality category. If you are asking a spiritual question, then I don’t appreciate this game that you are playing.
Assuming that you are, in fact, referring to a relationship with a potential life mate, and have made a legitimate mistake in the categorization of your question, I’ll respond..
I don’t think that I could be comfortable with someone who martyrs his or her self. When we have a family, will he or she still be offering up their lives for others or devoting their self to their family obligations?
Then I would ask myself if this person who is willing to give their life up in order to listen to my problems is enchanted with me, or does he or she just not have a life? I don’t need to be fixed; I’m not broken. I’m not looking for a life-mechanic. I want a partnership of equals. Does this person see me as a broken thing or a peer?
A sense of humor balanced with a serious side is a good thing.
You leave out too much information for me to be able to make a decision. There are other factors than the ones that you’ve mentioned that enter into selecting a life mate.
Do you share values and goals? What role do other family members play in your life together as a couple?
Money breaks a lot of relationships. Have you had full financial disclosure between the two of you? What debts and assets do each of you bring to the table? Do you keep your money separate or co-mingle it from here on out?
Have you talked about children? If one of you wants six and the other wants none, having three is a solution that no one is going to be pleased with. A compromise that makes everyone unhappy is generally good in a business setting, but it can be fatal in a personal relationship.
Last but not least, are you even remotely attracted to this person, physically or otherwise? Your introduction to the questions suggests to me that there s no attraction. If that is the case, let this person go so that he or she and you both can find someone else.

First of all are we talking about a person (like you) or a person as in God. Because if it is like you then I would have to say no people that go out of their way to make other happy are never really happy them-self unless they can make someone else happy all the time and we all know you can not do that. I am not saying that you can not be a good person but it does get old for the other person if you are always out trying to make someone happy. Soon then later it does come between the two of you.
You still need to care for others but you do not need to go out of your way all the time for everyone. It is a fine line that will drive you mad. But you did to make your mind up that you will only help when asked and if if does not mean that you have to give up your on live all the time to do it.

I am attracted to people who can sometimes put themselves first- they may not be as subservient, but they are much more interesting, since they have a life

Cute.. But the first answerer was spot on: grow some backbone and chisel out a character, that'll get you truer friends.

Frankly no! Such paragons of virtue have been few and far between since humanity evolved and if I met one my automatic reaction would be to distrust him or her. I'll stick to people with warts and all.
