No, I'm not. I follow a calling higher than myself. Don't always get it right but that's part of being human, too. And I can think of very few instances where helping others has made my life easier. Caring can be very hard work, and is not often materially rewarding. There are a lot of people who give without asking for anything in return. Looking out for #1 is an important survival skill, but it is not, nor should it be, the end-all, be-all life goal. Are you familiar with Maslow's hierarchy?

You might have noticed the calibre of the answers I've give on Yahoo Answers since I joined, many of which turned out to be Best Answers.
A lot of these Best Answers have proven to be directly helpful to some, highly amusing to others.
I find that sometimes, it works to do something for someone just because it needs to be done, it's no skin off my nose, but the recipient really needs the thing done. So I do it, and walk off without waiting for thanks.
Only yesterday, an ex texted me asking me for the number of a housing agency I knew. We'd parted under a cloud - but I forwarded her the agency number like a shot, and wished her all the best, too.
So no, not everyone behaves selfishly.

Doing Something for Nothing shows your Character, but to do something, and then gloat about it, is still considered selfish because you are looking for some kind of recognition.
To do a kind act to make yourself feel better is not too cool either, but widely accepted. This should be done whether or not it makes you feel better or not, you are doing it for someone else.
Anyway....there is a whole lotta people out here, expand yourself, and surround yourself with loving people, you will be rewarded.

I love to buy people gifts when I have money (I'm out of work at the moment) I do this because I like the feeling I get from watching others recieve them. Is that a bad thing I wonder.

Hard question, because when I do things for other people it gives me a sense of fulfillment or satisfaction. Sometimes, though, I'll do things that I don't want to--usually things for my two youngest siblings, whom I'm very close to, and those actions don't always give me any noticeable emotional "payback." In daily life, though--particularly in work/class, I'm pretty competitive, and I tend to focus on my own performance. Different people function differently, though, I think.

Some of us do things for others not for what we will get in return, but just for the good feeling it gives us to help someone else. I like that feeling. I have a job that gives me the opportunity to go to a business where there is a problem with their equipment, I fix it, they are happy and that makes me feel good. Never mind the fact that I get a salary for it, it still feels good to help others.

Maybe. I might treat my wife nice because when she is happy it makes me feel good. I might spend a lot of time and energy playing with my kids because it makes me feel good. I may just help out someone in need because I feel like a better person after wards.
When I feel bad for someone, say like someone who is dying, I could be feeling bad because I am looking at myself in the future and I am afraid of dying.
This question/answer seems kind of cyclical. What came first the chicken or the egg? What came first, me being nice or me feeling good about being nice? Me being nice came first, so I guess I am not out for me alone.

I am!
I have always had really low self confidence and i realised my friends appreciated me more when i did something to help them with something! and that helped me feel better about myself!
I don't do it in a selfish way as i do like helping people and i would do anything for my close family and friends, without a smile or thankyou!

Survival of the fittest. It's in our nature, even if it means killing our fellow man.
Look at the world around you, and you re own experiences , is it really that hard to believe.
