I am writing a short story and would like it to be accurate (to Catholics).
Is the mother supposed to quickly get remarried?
Would this be a scandal (in the 1960s or 1970s) or something since it might look like the mother was unwed (if people didn't know about the accident) & pregnant.

I have a character of a grandmother who tries to make the daughter name the child after a different (new) man, to make it look like he was the father.

Well, I'm not Catholic, but it would seem that the religion would have nothing to do with this scenario. She should have the funeral and then proudly have the baby. She and God know her situation - besides the busy bodies in town and the church (EVERY church has them) will be aware of her situation and will keep the "facts" (maybe somewhat distorted, but fairly truthful) out there. Tragedy, yes - scandal, no - not in the 60's or 70's.

And, it would seem that you would have a better story keeping the friction and disagreement between the generations - especially if your story is set in the 60's-70's.

If she stays in the place where she was married, the townspeople that know her, for example in her neighborhood or congregation, would know that she had been married unless yoiu made it so that she had gotten married somewhere else and came back to her hometown after her husband died.

I don't think being a Catholic would make any difference on a decision to remarry for appearance's sake, but then again, there are always people who worry WAY too much about what other people think about them.

No way! If nosey and rude people ask tell them excactly that. Your husband was killed. Forget your grandmother. Its YOUR baby. Name her whatever you want. Use your last name, or your late husbands last name. DOESN'T MATTER.
You shouldn't remarry quickly because you might end up with the wrond man. Take it slow. Very slow if your husband left a will leaving you a load of money.

I think they would consult the Church and then the Church would look at the scenario and say if it was ok or not ok. But they would probably say ok because they were a grieving widow who needs financial and loving support for her baby.
Have a fantastic weekend
Peace

We can all assume that the story is fiction, since you are looking for a proper Catholic response to these make-believe circumstances.

Since it's fiction, it really doesn't matter, does it?

Daughter was married at time of accident, why would she not give the child her last (married) name? Secrets! Not good.

There isn't any policy on how quickly a pregnant widow can get married in the Catholic church.

She would not need to marry unless her heart was in it. Widowhood and remarriage are honorable. She could just inform nosey people politely of her husbands death. Did you know that children of unmarried women and girls can also be Baptized?
