Keep him away from the furniture. Tie him up outside or just put him in a dog house. That's the only way. Trust me. I own a dog and he does the same thing. Possibly your dog is in the "teeth growing" stage and his/her gums will itch and he/she is chewing up furniture to relieve that.

Provide the dog with more mental stimulation, exercise, training and a collection of his own indestructible chewing toys such as Kongs, or Nylabones. There are only a few reasons why dogs destroy thier owners property, once you determine the cause you can take better actions to resolve the issue...
1) The dog chews the furniture because he/she is suffering from separation anxiety this is when the dog is left alone and destroys things etc..... Go here to read the causes and a description of the affliction to see if it applies to your dog, also tips on how to cure separation anxiety... http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pets_for_life_program/dog_behavior_tip_sheets/separation_anxiety.html

2) Boredom or frustration, or just attention seeking your dog may be simply bored and has no constructive outlet for his/her energy, or he/she may be trying to get your attention. This is usually the case if the dog does not get walked often or has no playmates or toys to play with. Go here to learn how to deal with destuction related to boredom.... http://www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca/yelp_Line/dogs/dog_destruction.php

3) Fears or phobias can also cause dogs to destroy things, go here for more info... http://www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca/yelp_Line/dogs/dog_destruction.php

4) Teething, this is common in young dogs who need to chew and do not yet knwo what is acceptable and waht is not acceptable chewing behaviour... Go here to learn how to treat puppy chewing behaviour.. http://www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca/yelp_Line/dogs/pup_chewing.php#other

Make sure to always provide your dog with plenty of his/her own toys, daily walks, and playful interaction from you such as playing fetch or teaching your dog new tricks and practicing old ones. Generally when provided with adquate outlets for thier abundant energy, and with positive reinforcement training dogs will not chew anything inappropriate. Positive reinforcement involves no punishment instead you redirect the dog to doing what you want them to do and what is acceptable. For example... when your dog chews the couch say "No" and give him his/her personal toy and encourage him/her to chew that INSTEAD of your couch. Make sure to try and determine first what the cause of thie behaviour is and then treat it, the links provided above should give you an idea of why so you can choose the proper course of treatment. All the links have instructions on how to treat each problem and it should help you out...

My dog used to chew on everything! I bought some Apple Bitter spray from Pets Mart and it worked like a charm. You spray it on anything your dog likes to chew on and it is safe for furniture and so forth. It retails for around 5 dollars, not a bad investment when your dog is chewing on everything. My best to you.

Muzzle? Just kidding.... Try some pepper spray on the areas most frequented by the canine's canines. Just don't let the kids do the applications. I'm a furnituremaker, and a dog lover/owner, and although my dog doesn't gnaw on my furniture, if she did, I think this would really take a bite out of her taking bites.

never leave the dog alone with furniture. I have a beagle that has destroyed 2 couches . the last couch was only 3 months old before he killed it. I never ....ever ...under any circumstances, leave him alone with furniture. His new place while I'm not around to keep an eye on him is in the basement. If you can't stop your dog from killing your furniture.........separate him from it, unless you are there to supervise him or her.

We have three dogs ... One is almost 2 years old ... One almost 1 ... And one almost 5 months ... We keep them all inside but have small kennels that we put the two younger ones in when we aren't at home to watch them ... Sometimes we even put the youngest dog in the cage at night ... The other two sleep with us in the bed ...

Go to Petco or any major chain pet store and you'll find a spray called "Bitter Apple" spray it on whatever you dog has been chewing and they won't chew on it any more... It tastes nasty but is completely harmless! Won't stain fabric either...
