NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is a toss up on which will blow up first the engine or your tranny.....and if your tranny gets all hot and botherd they tend to burn real good the oil in them anyway which can start other flamable parts of your car on fire..........if you are on a steep hill or long grade slip it into 2nd untill you have finished climbing and then put it back in drive.
On newer trucks and cars with 4 speed auto trans DO NOTuse the overdrive when you are hauling a trailer or heavy load in the bed. Check the manual or ask a good dealer/repair shop the details for your model

No, it's not safe for the transmission... You're putting a lot of unnecessary stress on the engine, causing it to overheat much too quickly...
