He is a dog. It is unfair for you to keep him stuck in an apartment all day long with nothing todo and no one to play with and get upset if he barks.

You fail to mention if the barking is all the time or just when there are noses to set him off.

In the event it is constant, you will need some training aids. I do not condone the use of the shocking collars and would suggest those who do say use them put one on themselves for a few days and see how they like it.

Here is a training method I have used to teach a dog only to bark when there was good cause. Get yourself some empty soda cans and place 2 or 3 pennies in them and tape the opening. Go out the door and remain very very quiet. When the dog starts to bark at nothing, open the door fast yelling like a banshee and rattling the heck out of one of the cans. Throw the can in the direction of the dog (try to miss but realize the can is not of sufficient weight to really harm the dog)

Repeat this procedure until you can remain outside the door for extended periods of time without the dog reacting with barking. When you can come in and the dog has been quiet, reward him with a good head rub and possibly a treat. It will take time but he will "get it"

Sorry to have to tell you, but a dalmation doesnt' belong in an apt! That is normally they don't. Are you a runner? If you are then s(he) might get enugh exercise. They need a lot of running. the breed was developed to run under carriages & protect the horses. Dogs have always loved chasing things that run, it's part of the preditor instinct. Dogs used to run loose. Dogs used to chase carriages, so the horses needed a protector. That was the Dalmation. They were spotted so that tey didn't look so bad w/ mud splattered on them (only the wealthy could afford their own carriages & they didn't want a filthy looking dog around.)
Imagine how many miles a day a dog doing this job would run. Your dog needs that much exercise. Did you check into the breed before you bought it?
They are also very intellegent, they need something to do while they are home alone. I bet s(he) chewed every peice of furniture in your house.... out of boredom.
You need to get yourself a good trainer. Don't get the cheapest trainer you can find. Get some referals. Talk to Dalmation rescue to find out the name of a trainer in your area & get tips about your breed. http://www.dogpile.com/info.dogpl/search/web/dalmation%252Brescue/1/-/1/-/-/-/1/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/417/top/-/-/-/0
AKC is a good source of info re your breed.

Dalmations are very active dogs, so when they're in an apartment by themselves they get bored; thus the barking. If you have a friend who could possibly walk him, or a neighbor that could check on him every once in a while, then he won't have as much urge to bark.

A dalmatian is not a good choice for a pet, but what's done is done. They are more likely than most breeds to bite people and a lot of them are blind.

they make a special collar that senses the vibration in the dog''s throat and then sends a mile shock to stop the dog from barking

I believe that your dog has seperation anxiety. See a trainer about this. You also need to make sure your dog has plenty of toys to stimulate him/her. Do some research on dog seperation anxiety on the web. I am sure that you will find plenty of help out there. Good Luck to you both!!!!

Give him a valium before you leave and wake him up when you get home. Other than that, no way that I know of.

You could pay someone to come by and walk him when you are at work and tire him out.
