Most small dogs have small lungs and since they are close to the ground all the time, they can get thier lungs filled with all sorts of things. There isnt really a cure for this. We just have to help them breathe in good things like fresh grass, etc...
we have a toy daucshund and a shih tzu

Depending on where you got your new puppy from should tell you the general condition of your dog. If you bought the dog from a pet store I am sorry to say that you wont really know what to expect. Many of these puppies come from parents with no vet care and are victims of careless overbreeding. If you bought your puppy from a responsible and reputable breeder, the original breeder should be able to tell you the dogs genetic history. Some of the most common problems in Chihuahua's are : Patellar Luxation,Progressive Retinal Atrophy,
Transient Juvenile Hypoglycemia , Cryptorchidism (Undescended Testicles) , Hydrocephalus, Demodicosis, Cystinuria , Mitral Valve Disease , and Hemophilia. As with any dog socialization and early training is a must! With most small dogs they become easily scared and intimidated and need to learn in a pleasant environment. I wish all pet owners would enroll their new puppies/dogs into a reward based training program. Not only is it fun and easy for you to understand, it is also fun and easy for your dog to understand. Not only will training give your dog better manners, it will help build the bond you will have with them and it will also give your dog the confidence and security that so many dogs dont ever get.

Possible health problems are low blood sugar, Bad knees, Hydrocephalus(water on the brain), liver problems. All breeds of dogs have health issues. The low blood sugar and the hydsdrocephalus are the 2 that are life threatening. Buy some nutrical(high calorie vitamin/mineral supplement) from the vet or pet store to have on hand in case of a low sugar attack. For very small pups, I give them a little nutrical 2-3 times a day to ward off low sugar. Enjoy that baby!! Great choice in dogs!! Is it a pup or an adult?

I believe they have some respiratory problems, trouble with their eyes and, I hope this doesn't gross you out, I have a friend of mine that has a chihuahua and she has to take her to the vet every once in a while and have the vet stick his finger in the dogs butt (something to do with anul secretions or something, I don't really know but I just got a chihuahua about a week ago and I hope to hell that I don't have to have someone stick their finger in her cute little butt). Good luck!!! Congratulations!!!

They have a tendency to get underfoot and be stepped upon by people who are careless about rat-like little pets.
